Car giant forced to recall 68,000 vehicles over engine issues

28/02/2025

Car giant Stellantis has been forced to issue another significant recall with 68,000 cars produced in France between 2022 and 2024 affected by concerns over a problem with its PureTech engines’ oil jet cooling nozzles.

This issue may cause excessive noise, engine casing damage, and oil spraying onto the exhaust pipe, increasing fire risk. The car group has yet to clarify whether these issues had already taken place or were hypothetical risks.

In 2023, Stellantis was the world's fourth-largest automaker by sales and has had to issue several recalls linked to a number of manufacturing issues. It has also recalled 27,354 Maserati vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the rear-view camera system.

In this latest incident, the recall will apply to 2,500 Peugeot 208 models, as well as 57,000 Citroën C3, and 8,700 Opel Corsa cars.

Stellantis told the media: “This is not a problem with the engine design but with the supplier, who has deviated from the manufacturing quality of these nozzles”.

Previous reports have highlighted concerns over excessive oil consumption and premature degradation of the timing belt. In response, Stellantis introduced a retroactive compensation platform earlier this year for buyers who experienced these problems between 2022 and 2024.

The flaw affecting Maserati is attributed to a radio software malfunction, can prevent the display from showing the rear-view image correctly, increasing the risk of accidents.

The company recently pledged nearly €2 billion to bolster manufacturing in Italy and has been gearing up for a multi-billion-dollar expansion in the United States.

Stellantis N.V. is a multinational automotive manufacturing company formed from the merger in 2021 of the Italian–American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the French PSA Group.
